Flying a 3-Channel Electric RC Glider!

Hello Everyone!!

I just posted a video of myself flying a glider. This is the plane that we built using a plan, so nothing was pre-assembled. It is a 3-channel electric glider that flies beautifully. It is a great plane to learn RC flying with because it is comparatively slow and very forgiving. The large wingspan makes it easier for a beginner to control. Once it is high up in the air, you can switch of the throttle completely and glide around for a long time. This way you get long flights.

We are slowly starting to set the stage for the next article on our blog, RC Planes for Beginners. I want to start showing you how the radio or the transmitter of an RC plane actually works. So stay tuned!

Quotes on Flying

Sometimes it is easier to express an idea or feeling using words of famous people. That is exactly what I am trying to do here. The thrill of flying cannot be expressed better than this! Do read what some of the greats have to say...I especially like the quote by Da Vinci myself!

I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn’t it be? - it is the same the angels breathe. ~Mark Twain, “Roughing It”

You haven’t seen a tree until you’ve seen its shadow from the sky. ~Amelia Earhart

There is an art, or rather a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ~Douglas Adams, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute. ~Gil Stern

Flight is the only truly new sensation than men have achieved in modern history. ~James Dickey

More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination. ~Wilbur Wright

Once you have learned to fly your plane, it is far less fatiguing to fly than it is to drive a car. You don’t have to watch every second for cats, dogs, children, lights, road signs, ladies with baby carriages and citizens who drive out in the middle of the block against the lights…. Nobody who has not been up in the sky on a glorious morning can possibly imagine the way a pilot feels in free heaven. ~William T. Piper

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. ~Friedrich Nietzsche

When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. ~Leonardo Da Vinci

The Wright Brothers created the single greatest cultural force since the invention of writing. The airplane became the first World Wide Web, bringing people, languages, ideas, and values together. ~Bill Gates

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn’t know that so it goes on flying anyway. ~Mary Kay Ash

The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air. ~Wilbur Wright

Article: Fly Plane: Join A Club For Great RC Plane Flying Instructions

Flyers Club has designed a curriculum that combines the different learning methods in the article below. We want to make the learning experience as engaging and educational as the flying itself.

The reason for starting our blog,

RC Planes for Beginners is also to give useful and readily available information on aeromodeling.

Fly Plane: Join A Club For Great RC Plane Flying Instructions

Join A Club For Great RC Plane Flying Instructions

By Victor Epand

All beginners opting to fly RC model planes are eager to learn. Their priority is to learn first. At times, they are scared of crashing their new planes or are worried that they may not learn fast. However, there are many methods of learning like RC flight stimulators, club instructions or self-training. Getting flying instructions from a flying club could be the best. Flight stimulators are quite popular for giving flying instructions. They are very realistic, which give the flyer a feel like one is in the real flying environment. The stimulator comes with amazing graphics and sounds, which changes depending on the virtual model of the plane you choose to fly.

But the best method of learning how to fly is by joining a flying club to get expert instructions. This method is more preferred than other methods. The beginners are advised to first opt for this, if their learning process has to be more meaningful and fast. With this method, one can easily learn how to fly gas models, instead of the electric models, which lack great versatility as compared to the gas models. There could be a number of flying clubs near you. All you need to do is check the list of the clubs near you and apply for membership.

There are several benefits of joining these flying clubs. First, you get to learn from people who are experts and experienced. They can tell you, how to learn quickly and what to do and not to do. These experts share their flying experiences with you and sometimes you will note that the manuals they give may be lacking in practical explanations. Secondly, you also get to learn from the club, as to which planes are meant for new members or beginners, so you don’t risk crashing your plane, while on the process of learning. Model planes are not that cheap, but when you learn from an expert, who uses an insured plane, it becomes less risky.

Instructions at the clubs are given in two main ways. The first way is called side-by-side instruction. In this method, the instructor and the learner share the same transmitter, while flying. The instructor gives the learner the instructions and the learner flies the plane as directed. In case, something goes wrong, for example the learner gets confused with the controls and flies the plane with wrong maneuvers, the instructor can quickly take on the radio control and bring the plane back on track till the learner is ready again to continue with the flight.

Another very effective technique and way is the use of buddy box system, where the instructor and the learner use two transmitters joined by the cable. The instructor holds the master transmitter, which gives the learner more chances to control the plane or unless otherwise. The problem with this method is that many clubs do no have buddy boxes. Whatever technique you wish to learn, it’s true that joining flying clubs is a very good way to get flying instructions to learn fly a great RC plane.

The Science Behind the Art of Delicious Craft Beer [Beer]

Here's something totally unrelated to flying RC planes, although a couple of brewskies on a Sunday afternoon will enhance the RC flying experience. (Kids please ignore this!! Alcohol is injurious to health)

RC Planes for Beginners does not endorse alcohol consumption, but a couple of beers never killed anyone!

Gizmodo
Craft beer. It's delicious. Brewing it is an art. But it's also a science. Our friends at Eater visited Colorado's Great Divide Brewery, and explain how it's done, in 10 easy steps. [Eater] More »

Worst RC Hand Launch Crash EVER!!

Wanted to share a video showing the lighter side of it. Hand launching planes is very commonplace, but sometimes it can be a bit tricky. The most important thing that I've learnt since I started flying and building RC planes - everything matters, no matter how small!

Check out this video on YouTube:

All the stuff that I paste at RC Planes for Beginners intend to give information, and most of them have a "hidden" lesson! Hope I am able to get those across.

It's great to see the popularity aeromodeling is getting. This is another testament to what I firmly believe, that as a hobby, aeromodeling provides a great platform of learning different skills.

Flyers Club is very excited to be able to bring this exciting hobby to the city of Kolkata. Please feel free to write to us at info@flyersclub.in for details about upcoming workshops.

AEROMODELLING CALLING YOUNG ENTHUSIASTS

By K. Rathna

One of the most popular events organised regularly as part of Dasara every year is the Air Show at Bannimantap Parade Grounds which draws huge crowd. As the spectators keep waiting with baited breath, scanning the blue skies overhead for the big metal birds from the Indian Air Force to make their appearance, what keeps the crowd mesmerised for a few moments is a miniature remote controlled aircraft that darts all across the sky, performing loops and somersaults and sometimes even flying barely over their heads.

The curious among them, especially college and high school students, would have dreamt of building such miniature flying models on their own and watch it fly. They can now realise their dreams, thanks to two enterprising and budding engineers.

Though the city already has several amateur hobbyists as well as professionals building racing bicycles, bikes and designer cars on their own, there is no one who ventured to build miniature aircraft and also teach others, except maybe for K. Shreyas and Ananya Balasu-bramanya, Directors of International Academy of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (IAMAS).

“I had avid interest to take on to wings but couldn’t fly due to optical constraints. So I thought why not fulfill our dreams by doing aeromodeling,” says Ananya, an engineering student of NIE. After she met Shreyas of SJCE, both joined hands together to initiate the process of opening the miniature wings to the young enthusiasts of city.

Though both are students of two different Engineering Colleges in city, they have teamed together and taken the initiative to give wings to the flying aspirations of the youth.

Say the duo, “Aeromodelling is the art of designing and flying unmanned aircraft. The aircraft is usually a scaled down version of an actual aeroplane or one designed specially by the hobbyist. Ours is a joint initiative of Rotary Mysore Adventure Corps (RMAC), an undertaking of Rotary Mysore and IAMAS.”

“Basically aeromodelling is of two types. It can be either a non-powered, uncontrolled, free-floating glider, or a multi engine, fue-lled, radio controlled aircraft having wingspans of six feet and more. Many people start off by building a free-floating glider readily available as a kit and progress to advanced models as they improve their skills,” says M.M.P. Kumar, a retired NCC Associate Officer, who will be the guide for the youth who wish to give life to their designs.

Rtn. K.G. Venkatraman, President, Rotary Mysore, avers that this innovative hobby will imbibe self-confidence and stimulate interest among students to nurture and fulfill their aspirations while doing things differently.

Disclosing the details about the course, Shreyas informed that it is open for all students in the age group of 12 to 20 years and the class will be held twice a week, on Saturdays and Sundays at Rotary High School, KRS Road. Admission is restricted to only 20 students and registration will be done on a first- cum-first-serve basis.

For details, contact Shreyas on Mob: 96206-08102 /98451-16835 or Ananya on Mob: 96639-30777 between 5 pm and 9 pm. Those interested can register their names with Mahesh, Rotary Mysore Secretariat, Rotary Centre, JLB Road.

Rtn. D.S.D. Solanki is the Advisor to RMAC.

From the horse's mouth !

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer gives reasons for choosing aeromodeling as a hobby. I could not find a better testimonial (yet!!) than this honest attempt by an aeromodeller.

After getting a lot of questions on the benefits of aeromodeling, I decided to do some research. It was pretty interesting to note that all the IITs in India have an aeromodeling club, and are actively promoting model aviation. A major percentage of people that are into this hobby are from the armed forces.

And then, I found this small article by an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (one of the career paths in aviation). It has definitely strengthened my opinion about aeromodeling as a hobby, sport and a genuine "pre-career" option!

Now I am more than convinced, that I really need to make my blog "RC Planes for Beginners", even more comprehensive and exciting.

My First!!

This is a great picture that I managed to capture with my phone. That's my daughter playing around with a kite. I had taken her to show how a kite flies and her excitement was unbelievable when she saw me fly it. This immediately reminded me of how I felt when I built and flew my first RC plane....

I have started my blog, RC planes for Beginners, also to chronicle my journey through the world of aeromodeling. I would love to pass on the excitement of flying radio controlled airplanes to my daughter. Then even she will start believing that she can "fly"!!!
